Understanding Adult ADHD: Symptoms, Subtypes, and Linked Conditions!

Dr Jahan KhanExpert Insights with Dr Jahan Khan

Discover how ADHD presents in adults, the key symptoms, subtypes, and related conditions. Consultant Psychiatrist Dr Jahan Khan at mediconline.ie explains what to look for and when to seek an assessment.

Does ADHD Only Affect Children?

Dr Khan: ADHD isn’t limited to childhood. While many associate it with young
people, its impact often extends into adulthood. For adults, ADHD can make work, relationships, and daily routines harder to manage. It’s also a myth that ADHD is only about hyperactivity or distractibility; the reality is much more complex, especially when other conditions are present.

Types of ADHD in Adulthood

Dr Khan: Adult ADHD generally falls into three categories:

  • Predominantly Inattentive: Trouble staying organised, maintaining focus, or
    remembering details.
  • Predominantly Hyperactive-Impulsive – Restlessness, impulsive decision-making,
    and difficulty remaining still.
  • Combined Type – A mixture of inattentive and hyperactive traits.

ADHD is often identified more in boys during childhood, but many women are overlooked because their symptoms lean toward inattentiveness, which can be hidden by coping mechanisms.

The “Iceberg Effect” in ADHD

Dr Khan: The iceberg analogy shows that the visible behaviours, such as distractibility or fidgeting, are just the surface. Below are deeper challenges, including problems with emotional control, confidence, and everyday functioning. Many adults don’t realise they have ADHD until these hidden difficulties start affecting their quality of life.

Key Signs of ADHD in Adults

Some of the most common indicators that Dr Khan highlights include:

  • Poor organisation and difficulties managing time
  • Starting but not finishing projects
  • Misplacing items and forgetfulness
  • Trouble prioritising or focusing on tasks
  • Feeling restless and unable to relax
  • Mood swings, irritability, and emotional challenges
  • Interrupting others or speaking without thinking
  • Struggling with stress and feeling overwhelmed
  • Risk-taking behaviours such as unsafe driving

Common Conditions with ADHD

What are common Co-Existing Conditions with ADHD?

Dr Khan: ADHD rarely appears alone. Many adults have other conditions alongside it, which can make diagnosis more complex. These may include:

  • Anxiety and Depression are often linked to the pressures ADHD creates, as well as low self-esteem. Rejection Sensitivity Dysphoria (RSD) is also common.
  • Obsessive-Compulsive Disorder (OCD): Repetitive thoughts and behaviours, which need to be distinguished from traits in Autism.
  • Eating Issues – Binge eating may occur due to dopamine-seeking behaviour, and ADHD treatment often reduces these urges.
  • Autism and Sensory Sensitivities – ADHD and Autism overlap in up to 70% of cases. Individuals may experience sensory overload from lights, sounds, textures, or smells.
  • Learning Challenges and Intellectual Disabilities: ADHD is significantly more common in people with learning difficulties, such as reading or maths disorders.
  • Sleep Disturbances. An overactive mind makes it difficult for many adults with ADHD to fall asleep, stay asleep, or wake up easily.

When to Consider an ADHD Assessment?

Dr Khan: If you recognise these challenges in yourself or someone close to you, it may be time to seek an assessment. A professional diagnosis can bring clarity and open the door to tailored treatment. ADHD can significantly impact everyday life, but with the right support, individuals can manage their symptoms and reach their full potential.
